Challenging, hands-on learning experiences for Students

The Garfield Park Conservatory Alliance Green Teens Program engages high school students on Chicago’s West Side in challenging, hands-on learning experiences that provide important, personal development opportunities and job training, while at the same time fulfilling the service learning hours that Chicago Public Schools require students to have for high school graduation.

Adolescents on the West Side, like young people everywhere, need opportunities to gain leadership, social, academic, and jobs skills, which will prepare them for adulthood. The Green Teens Program offers an exciting 10-week core-training program that provides such opportunities with its focus on the following:

Leadership Development: academics,
   public speaking, presentation skills,

   writing, civic involvement;

Personal and Social Development:
   confidence, teamwork, interpersonal
   communication, conflict resolution;

Preparedness for After High School:
   job readiness, higher education,
   planning and scheduling, personal
   responsibility/accountability.

After the core-training program, the Docents are given the opportunity to implement what they have learned within the plant collection.
